It includes automation, augmentation, restructuring, and risk management at the same time. AI output still requires humans to judge, decompose, verify, and iterate. OpenAI's GPT-4 description states that large models may still produce factual hallucinations and reasoning errors, and that high-risk scenarios require human review, contextual grounding, or avoiding direct use. Therefore, the key question in the AI era is not whether division of labor is still needed, but how the boundaries of division of labor change. Based on division-of-labor theory, AI labor-impact research, and AI risk-governance frameworks, this article argues that AI is better understood as an amplifier of strong planks, not a complete substitute for weak planks. For individuals, the best strategy is to build AI leverage around existing professional strengths. For organizations, the best form remains the super team, not the replacement of teams by large numbers of all-purpose individuals.

3. The Boundary of AI as Weakness Compensation: It Lowers the Starting Threshold but Does Not Automatically Remove Knowledge Barriers

AI can indeed help people do tasks they are not good at. For example, non-developers can use AI to generate frontend pages, backend APIs, database schemas, and deployment scripts. This lowers the starting threshold for weak tasks, turning "I cannot do it" into "I can try."

6. The Boundary of the Super Individual: It Exists but Should Not Be Misunderstood as the Main Replacement for Organizations

"Super individual" is a frequent concept in the AI era. It usually means that one person uses AI to complete tasks that previously required a team. This phenomenon objectively exists, especially for content production, prototypes, independent tools, personal automation, small SaaS products, data analysis, and low-risk business workflows.

But super individuals have clear boundaries.

First, they suit tasks with low collaboration cost, low compliance risk, and low system complexity. One person can quickly build a blog system, internal tool, design mockup, data dashboard, or automation script with AI. But when the task enters financial-grade risk control, medical compliance, large-scale distributed systems, complex supply chains, enterprise security governance, multi-tenant platforms, or cross-team delivery, the task is no longer just "generate content." It becomes a responsibility system that must keep running.

Second, super individuals still depend on external infrastructure. AI models, cloud services, open source frameworks, payment systems, identity authentication, databases, monitoring platforms, deployment platforms, legal support, and compliance systems are not created from nothing by the super individual. This shows that the super individual stands on higher-level infrastructure to compress local team size, rather than eliminating social division of labor.

Third, super-individual output needs trustworthy processes. 7. The Advantage of Super Teams: Multiple Strong Planks Connected by AI Into a Larger Bucket

If a team is viewed as a bucket, the traditional view says its capacity is determined by the shortest plank. In the AI era, a more accurate model is this: team capacity depends on interface quality, collaboration efficiency, and risk-governance capability among multiple strong planks.

In a super team, everyone uses AI to lengthen their professional strong plank.

Engineers use AI to improve code generation, test completion, incident diagnosis, and documentation. Product managers use AI to improve user research, competitive analysis, PRD generation, and user-feedback summarization. Designers use AI to explore styles, generate assets, and build interaction prototypes. But if the user lacks development, deployment, data-processing, and troubleshooting ability, every step in the DIY process can create new learning costs. Even if the tool is eventually completed, it may cover only one scenario, and its stability, usability, security, and maintainability may be weaker than mature products.

If a mature developer uses AI to amplify a development strong plank, the developer can lower development cost and set product prices at low levels, such as low-cost subscription, small payment, or freemium. In that case, an ordinary user spending large amounts of time compensating for a development weakness may be less economical than directly buying a low-cost mature tool.

This case shows that AI weakness compensation has opportunity cost. For non-core capabilities, market division of labor remains effective. 10. Conclusion

The AI era has not overthrown bucket theory. It has changed the level at which bucket theory applies. At the simple-task level, AI can compensate for weak planks and give individuals cross-domain starting ability. At the complex-task level, AI cannot eliminate the need for professional knowledge, verification ability, and organizational governance. Therefore, the core strategy in the AI era is not to average out every weakness, but to selectively fix necessary weaknesses and invest most resources in amplifying strong planks.

Division-of-labor theory remains suitable for the AI era. What changes is that the unit of division moves from role to task, and the collaboration object expands from "human and human" to "human and AI, human and process, human and organization." It should aim for each person to make their own strong plank longer, then combine those planks through division of labor and collaboration into a larger bucket.
